Premise
What would you do if you could see the future of your relationship? This film follows a roller coaster ride with Jai and Diya as they ride the ups and down of their relationship through the test of time.
Jai Verma (Sidharth Malhotra), a mathematical genius, finds himself randomly travelling through time – (into the past and future) until he learns to value his present. He gets to relive a significant day of his life in order to avert future setbacks. Can this disorder alter his life for better?

These are people who seem to have figured out not just themselves, but their relationships, life, future, everything; who are seemingly content with what life has to offer and comfortable with the regular and the accepted. Because of all the time-travelling, Sidharth Malhotra is forced to keep the same dazed and confused expression on his face throughout the film. Baar Baar Dekho begins with a beautifully wrought summary of a grand romance — Diya and Jai are born on different continents; their paths cross in Delhi when they are eight; they become best friends and the relationship deepens into love. All of this happens before the opening credits finish. I was instantly sold — on both, the characters and the talent of debutant director Nitya Mehra.

Bearing the brunt of his ‘going to sleep and waking up in a new time period’ routine, is his ‘abs’olutely stunning wife Dia Kapoor (Katrina Kaif), who’s the ‘driver’ in their relationship. She’s too clingy, he’s too disinterested and busy with his calculations to notice her unconditional love for him. The film unravels what lies ahead for these childhood sweethearts.

The concept of an individual getting a glimpse of their future and coming back in time to correct the present has been repeatedly visited by Hollywood. It has not, however, been explored in contemporary Hindi commercial films so when Delhi boy Jai Varma (Sidharth Malhotra) wakes up one day after a fight with his fiancée Diya Kapoor (Katrina Kaif) to find himself fast forwarded in time and place to their honeymoon in Thailand, it is natural to expect an unconventional film.

Debutant director Nitya Mehra attempts to make a ‘high-concept’ love story, only to fall light years short of what the film could have been. The film keeps you guessing, to the point that you don’t really care. The screenplay doesn’t have any room for anything except this feast of beauty; from the background to the people in front of the camera. The film leaves you un-understandably restless; you want to leave the theatre, but the promise of Kala Chashma at the end of the film keeps you waiting.
