If you haven’t seen it yet, Game Of Thrones is pretty much the most popular show since the dawn of time. Here we picks out lessons from Game of Thrones that can easily be applied in the domain of work!
If you find the warcraft and scheming in Game of Thrones exciting, we’re sure you will appreciate our humble attempt at doing a quick takeaway from the show’s storyline as it applies to the everyday entrepreneur!
1. Clear and coherent strategising
- The driving force of this heart-thumping series no doubt lies in the depth of its characters, but also equally on the nature of the strategies that they employ.
- When it comes to good strategising capabilities, who can forget a important character of the show, Petyr Baelish (Littlefinger).
- He is a highly skilled master planner who has used his intelligence to (turn into a solid) his position across seasons in spite of his lack of physical strength and wealth.
- So if you’re out to conquer the world of demand and supply, sound strategy is what will keep you ahead of your peers!
2. Never let the situation get the better of you
- One of the youngest but most fearless characters in the series, Arya Stark has had a tough run since the first season, having lost her home as well as her whole family.
- Rather than giving up, she used all her bad luck to further strengthen her willpower for revenge.
- Perfecting her fighting skills, scheming her way from one place to another, the ‘She-wolf’ is a difficult/impressively strong force for all her enemies (without any concern about/having nothing to do with) their age and strength.
- From Arya Stark we have learned never to get overwhelmed by any situation and turn every disadvantage into a crucial learning lesson.
3. Rely on yourself
- Another lesson to learn from the little Stark girl is to believe that you are capable of doing big and impactful things.
- Sometimes the unfamiliar and unforeseen can bring out talents you didn’t know you had.
- The extremely strongly independent Arya Stark shows a good example of this by rejecting the idea of being a “proper lady” (already decided beforehand to happen) to marry a prince and bear children, choosing to create her own future as an evil and violent fighter instead.
- It’s everyone for themselves in GoT, and the same principle applies at work too.
4. Be debt-free
- If you’ve been following the series loyally, you are all too familiar with the fact that the Lannisters always pay the money they owe.
- Follow their way of thinking to the T and watch your business grow by leaps and bounds
5. Never underestimate your opponents
- The show portrayed this principle spectacularly through the ‘The Mountain and Viper’ episode.
- The trial by combat pitted together two seemingly unequal opponents—the gigantic and unimaginably strong Gregor Clegane and Prince Oberyn, who is no match for The Mountain when it comes to strength and stature.
- However, in the initial stages of the combat, the Prince uses his swiftness and agility to almost defeat Clegane.
- Overconfidence, however, gets the better of him in the end. The bottomline here is to trust yourself and play your strengths to a maximum without underestimating your rivals.
6. Build followership
- Nothing exemplifies this principle better than the show’s female protagonist, Daenerys Targaryen.
- Born with nothing but enemies all around her and left to the devices of her brother, the Mother of Dragons wins over people with compassion, grace and justice.
- Through her deeds, she has managed to gather the support of a strong army and many loyal and important supporters and is now among the strongest contenders for the Iron Throne.
- The lesson to learn here is that treat your people kindly because you never know when you may need them!
7. Never give up
- This principle applies to almost every character in this series, but no one clearly shows it better than Tyrion Lannister.
- What The Dwarf doesn’t have in height, he makes up for with his clever humor, thinking ability and intelligence.
- His willpower to live and succeed has seen him survive a fight, a trial and an execution and we’re rather positive that we’ll see more of him in the episodes to come.
- So, if you’re to make a page from Tyrion Lannister’s diary your own, let it be the one that says, never give up!
