1. The Tub
In the punishment, the person was made to sit in a tub and was fed on regular basis, at some point of time there was a situation created where was floating in his own excreta, moreover, his face was painted with honey and milk and bees would fed on his face.
2. The Brazen Bull
This torture technique was devised in ancient Greece. A metal chamber was made in the shape of a bull and the person was placed inside it. Then this structure was put on a fire until metal is red because of heating and person inside is slowly roasted to death.
3. Impalement
Brainchild idea of Vlad ‘the impaler’ of Romania, this technique was used by him to kill people. In this the person was made to sit on the pointed end of a pole, then the pole raised slowly and the person would slide down of his own weight. It would take more than 72 hours to die.
4. Neck Torture
The person was leashed with the neck collar having pointed needles, all he could do to save himself was to sit upright, even the slightest neck movement was sufficient for the needles to thwart his upper skin.
5. Crucifixion
Who doesn’t know about this method, Christ was not the only one to be crucified.
6. Sprinkler
This device was firstly filled with some hot liquid or molten metal, then it was slowly poured on the body parts of the victim, leading to a slow, painful and horrifying death.
7. Iron Maiden
This cabinet had a hinged door with spikes all over it. It was deliberately made exactly the size of human body so the person doesn’t have much space to move. This technique was basically used for interrogation. The interrogators asked the question and when they didn’t got satisfactory answer they used to poke the person up.
8. Coffin Torture
As the name suggest, a coffin is made of steel bars and the person was stuffed in that. After this, he was suspended from a height and was left there until crows and vultures would feed upon it.
9. Thumbscrew
Well, there were many variant made of this type hence giving a wide apparatus for torture techniques. There were head crushers, knee and elbow crushers, etc. They did the same work though slowly giving pain.
10. Guillotine
This was considered to be the most humane way of execution among all of torture techniques. It was made of a razor sharp blade and the person to be executed was made to lie down on the plank perpendicular to the blade. The rope tied with blade was cut, the blade would drop and cut the body into two halves.
11. The Rack
The man was made to lie down a plank and was then tied with rope. The gears were then turned hence stretching the ropes attached to the hands and legs, they would stretch to that level where it would dislocate and sometimes even tear off from the body.
12. Heretics Fork
This torture device consisted of a metal piece with two opposed bi-pronged forks attached to a belt or strap. One end of the device was pushed under the chin, the other to the sternum, and the strap was used to secure the victim’s neck to the tool while the victim hung from the ceiling or was somehow suspended so that they could not sleep. If their heads dropped, the prongs would pierce their throat and chest.
13. The Judas Cradle
Closely related to impalement, this gruesome punishment entailed having the victim sit on the pyramid-shaped cradle, after which they would be forced down on it by ropes with the intent of stretching the victim’s orifice over a long period of time, slowly impaling them. To add to the overall humiliation, the victim was usually naked and the device was rarely washed. So if the torture did not kill you, the infection contracted from it would.
14. Tongue Tearer
Looking like an oversized pair of scissors, it could effortlessly cut the victim’s tongue. Their mouth would be forced opened with a device called a mouth opener, and then the iron tongue tearer would uncomfortably twitch the tongue with its rough grippers. Once a firm hold was maintained, the screw would be firmly tightened and the victim’s tongue would roughly be torn out.
15. Rat Torture
Being in an enclosure with rats is torture enough; but apparently, this is not enough for medieval times. One of the most sadistic of all torture techniques involved having a cage with one open side strapped against the victim’s body. It would then be filled with large rodents and a heating element which would be placed on the other side of the cage. The rodents’ natural instinct led them to flee the intense heat. In order to escape they would burrow through the victim’s body with fatal results.
