Google on Wednesday said cricket’s showpiece event ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 trumped all other major happenings, hot trends and talking points to emerge as the most trending event in India in 2015. Immediately after cricket, entertainment occupied the second spot with Baahubali, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Sunny Leone, Salman Khan topping Google lists.

“India’s undying love for cricket showed no sign of cooling off with the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 and Indian Premier League (IPL) ensuring that cricket fans were always close to their browsers for instant updates. On-field and off-field excitement is well reflected in ‘Year in Search 2015’ as ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 captures the top spot on the trending charts,” Google said in a statement.

Bilingual “Bahubali”, starring Prabhas and directed by Rajamouli, took the second spot in the top trending searches. Other movies which created a buzz online were “Bajrangi Bhaijaan”, “ABCD – 2” and “Prem Ratan Dhan Payo” among others.

Once again, former adult star Sunny Leone beat the likes of Salman Khan, Kalam, Katrina Kaif, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Shah Rukh Khan to claim the first position in the list of most searched personalities, Google said.

According to Google’s list, the Vyapam scam was the top searched news event of the year while former president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam’s death, the Nepal earthquake, the Seventh Pay Commission and the Sheena Bora murder case also grabbed major mind space.

In other categories, MicroMax YU Yureka took the first spot in the mobile devices category while cricketer Virat Kohli pipped other sports personalities like Lionel Messi, Sachin Tendulkar, M.S. Dhoni, Sania Mirza and Roger Federer in the sports personalities category.
“The power of digital media continues to surge, especially searches on smartphones, a trend that is reflective of India’s growing digital emergence as the next billion Indians begin to embrace the power of the internet,” said Google India managing director Rajan Anandan said in the statement.
